Inexpensive Key West Fun!

Believe it or not, there is more to Key West than drinking, fishing, and diving, all of which can add up tremendously price-wise over the course of your vacation.  So, for the frugal traveler or for those of you looking to do something a bit different in Key West style, here are some other activities to keep in mind. 

 
  • Bingo at the 801 Bar

801 Duval Street, 294-4737. Bingo on Sunday at 4:30 p.m., no cover, proceeds go to local charities, come join the fun as drag queens call the shots.
  • Bingo at the Key West Senior Center

1016 Georgia Street, 995-5165. Games played on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.  Cost is $3.00 per game.

  • Bingo at the American Legion

College Road, 294-7374. Games are on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

  • Bocce at Indigenous Park

White and Atlantic Streets. Monday through Thursday at 6:30 p.m.  Played seasonally, starting in February.

  • Botanical Garden

Stock Island off College Road on the right side just over the bridge.  11-acre, city-owned garden is opened from 10-4 every day is free to the public (there is a suggested donation of $4.00 per person). 

  • Casa Antigua
Located at the Pelican Poop Shoppe on 314 Simonton Street you can take a self guides tour through the gardens of this former hotel where Hemingway stayed when he first visited Key West. Open 10-6 daily.  Tour cost is $2 unless you purchase something at the Shoppe for $10 or more. 
  • Cinema Shores Outdoor Movie
At Atlantic Shores Resort, 510 South St. 296-2941. 
Thursday nights.  The movie starts at 8 p.m. admission is $4.00.  Free popcorn.
  • Dance Lessons

At Paradise Health and Fitness, 1796 N. Roosevelt Blvd,296-6348. Salsa Rueda every Friday from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. for all levels.   Ballroom Dancing every Sunday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for all levels. Only $6.00 per session!

At El Meson de Pepe's, 410 Wall Street, Every night at 6pm.

  • Fishing
Tortuga Charters offers two trips daily at just $45 per person!  What better way to get out on the water and bend a rod. 
  • Fort Zachary Taylor State Park
The west end of Southard Street 305-292-6713. Open 8 a.m. to sunset.  Admission fee is $1.50 per person for walkers or bikers and $2.50 per person in a car.  The fort was built between 1845 and 1866.  Tours are available.  This 87-acre park is great for beach fun, snorkeling and picnics.
  • Key West Cemetery
At Frances and Olivia Streets in Old Town.  Take a self-guided tour through our burial ground. Plenty of history is revealed just by reading the tomb stones.
  • Key West Conch Baby Farm
The Conch Baby Farm is free, it's fun, and it's an opportunity you won't get anywhere else.  Mote Marine Laboratory is located just steps from the Key West Bight at 631 Greene St. behind the Conch Republic Seafood Company.  Operating hours are Tuesday - Saturday from 11am - 7pm. Call 305-296-3551.
  • Key West Historic Memorial Sculpture Garden
The Key West Memorial Sculpture Garden opened in September of 1997.  Located in front of the Waterfront Playhouse and adjacent to the Key West Chamber of Commerce in Mallory Square, the Garden features 36 bronze busts depicting men and women that made Key West such a vibrant and important outpost of American culture and folklore. 
  • Key West Library
700 Fleming St.  305-292-3595. Children’s story hour on Tuesday and Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. and Summer Reading Program on Thursday and Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Free.
  • Key West Southernmost Runner’s Club
305-745-3027. The club schedules weekly runs for fun or training purposes.  It’s open to anyone.
  • Petting Zoo
5501 College Road  at the Jail on Stock Island 305-296-2424.  
Open on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.  Admission is free.
  • Saint Paul's
Located at 401 Duval St. This was the first church built on the island.  The stained glass windows are beautiful.
  • Southernmost Point
On the corner of Whitehead St. and South St.  From this southernmost point of the continental United States of America it is just 90 miles away from the communist isle of Cuba. 
  • Snorkeling
Join us on one of the many catamarans that visit the reef. Per person rates start at $35 for adults.
  • Sunset at Mallory Square
Sunset hour varies with season; Tons of entertainment, no cost.
  • Swimming at FKCC
305-296-9081, ext. 362. Cost is $2 per day.  Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday through Thursday.  On Friday hours are 6:30 a.m. to noon and the pool is open on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. 
  • Tea Dance
Atlantic Shores Resort 305-296-2491. Sunday from 8 to 11 p.m. D.J. dance party, no cover, cash bar.
  • Tennis at Astro Park
Higgs Beach. Six unlighted courts. Always open.
  • Tennis at Bayview Park
Virginia Street  305-294-1346. Five lighted, hard surface courts.  Open from sunrise to 10 p.m. 
  • Key West Writers Guild
At Kelly’s Caribbean Bar, Grill and Brewery, 303 Whitehead Street, 305-296-3646. Authors and aspiring authors, published and unpublished welcome at the meetings on the second and fourth Saturday of every month.  Meeting is from 10 a.m. to noon.
  • Wildlife Rescue Center
305-294-1441. Come see the birds and other wildlife at the corner of White and Atlantic streets inside the McCoy Indigenous Park.  Admission is free (although donations to help the birds are needed).  Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • YMCA Skate Park
3145 Flagler St. (behind the fire station), 305-295-9622. Two-hour skateboard or inline skate session for kids under 18 is $3.  Open every day but Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • YMCA Family Skate Night
305-295-9622. Held at hockey rink on Key West High School Grounds.  Skates only.  Open from 7 to 9:45 p.m.  Cost is $3 for children or adults.
  • YMCA Family Swim
FKCC swimming pool 305-295-9622. Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.  Features Toy the Tanker a jungle gym for the pool.  Cost is $3 for adults and $2 for kids.
  • Yoga College of India
812 Southard Street (upstairs) 305-292-1854. Classes are at 8 a.m., 4 and 6 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; at 8 and 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday; 8 and 10 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.  Wear light clothing and bring a large towel and water.  Cost is $9.  If it’s your first visit, please arrive 10 minutes early. 
  • Yoga by the Sea
On the platform at Higgs Beach next to White Street Pier 305-292-1970. Monday and Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. and Monday through Friday at 6:30 p.m.
  • Yoga in Paradise
Atlantic Shores Resort 304-3277. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 8 to 9 a.m. on the pier, Cost is $8 per class.
