January 1-12 Red Barn Theatre presents: Oil City Symphony - In this fun, knee-slapping musical, four graduates of Oil City High return to their alma mater to honor their music teacher. Be prepared to do the Hokey-Pokey! Remember … it’s hip to be square. Waterfront Playhouse presents: Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps - ”The 39 Steps,” Broadway’s longest running comedy, is a giddy display of theatrical invention, in which 4 actors create over 150 characters to portray Hitchcock’s cinematic masterpiece. Winner of the Tony, Olivier and Drama Desk “Best Play” Awards. Showtime 8 p.m.

January 4-5 Ragnar Relay Florida Keys – Miami to Key West - A 199 mile running event that will push you as far south as you can go in the continental U.S. Starting in Miami and finishing in Key West, this relay offers runners a unique opportunity to run near the oceanside and across the southern end of the state of Florida. Along the way you run across multiple bridges including the Seven Mile Bridge, hopping from Key to Key, passing through popular destinations such as Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon Key and Big Pine Key. The race (and your stamina) will wrap up in the tropics of the southernmost city in the continental U.S., Key West. Clear your calendars for this one, this is a running race you don’t want to miss!

January 6, 13, 20, 27 Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center presents: Free Environmental Films Series - Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary invites the public to enjoy free environmentally-themed documentary films every Sunday through March 31, 2013 at the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center in Key West. Each Sunday, doors to the center will open at 1 p.m. and sanctuary staff will show documentaries at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the center’s theater. These award-winning documentaries address environmental topics including climate change, marine debris, energy efficiency and resource protection. Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center is located at 35 East Quay Road, on the Truman Waterfront next to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park.

January 10-20 31st Annual Key West Literary Seminar - The 2013 seminar includes two independent sessions (Jan. 10-13 & 17-20) exploring the theme “Writers on Writers.” Sessions spotlight the life and work of literary icons like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Emily Dickinson, John Cheever and Ernest Hemingway under the guidance of the contemporary writers and scholars who know them best. Writing workshops are scheduled Jan. 13-17.

January 16 Waterfront Playhouse presents: Fiona Molloy – All Kinds of Wonderful - A Concert of World and Irish Folk music! Showtime 8 p.m.

January 19 Eighth Annual Florida Keys Seafood Festival - A family-friendly event with local fresh Keys seafood, drinks, marine-related crafts, youth activities, and live music. Free admission; hours open from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Bayview Park at Truman Avenue and Jose Marti Drive. Discovery Saturday Educational Series: Boat Bonanza - Presented by the Florida Keys Eco Discovery Center, this family-friendly and educational series invites kids in kindergarten through fifth grade from 10-11 a.m. to play games and make crafts while learning about a new topic of interest and the marine ecosystems of the Keys. Discovery Saturday is held the third Saturday of every month. Pre-registration is recommended. The Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center is located at 35 East Quay Road on the Truman Annex waterfront in Key West. Admission is free and free parking is available.

January 20 Key West Half Marathon Run - The perfect place to run in the middle of winter? Key West, during the Key West Half Marathon! Recognized by Runners World magazine as one of the 10 great half-marathons of the winter season, the run has attracted more than 1,000 annual participants and follows a 13.1-mile course through Old Town Key West past historic landmarks and the island’s scenic waterfront.

January 20-25 Premier Racing presents: Key West Race Week - The annual challenge features world-class competition and yachting teams from more than 12 countries and 24 American states. More than 100 racing yachts compete for class championships in this international regatta. To view the action, fans can book seats on spectator boats ranging from excursion catamarans to historic tall ships or from land at Key West’s Atlantic-front restaurants, resorts and beaches.

January 22-31 Red Barn Theatre presents: The Divine Sister - This gleefully demented and twisted tale is an outrageous and rollicking comic homage to nearly every Hollywood film involving nuns. The Mother Superior must deal with postulants with visions, sexual hysteria among her nuns and a former suitor intent on luring her away from her vows. Nary a dull moment! “R” Rated, so don’t bring kiddies!

January 24-27 Key West Food & Wine Festival - Top chefs and restaurateurs showcase their culinary creativity and the Keys’ indigenous cuisine in a tasty schedule of events for food lovers. Attendees also can participate in food-related adventures during the savory celebration. Walker Brothers Circus – America’s favorite indoor circus comes to Key West with its 90 minute shows featuring thrills, chills, laughter, and lots of animals! Circus will be held at the Truman Waterfront at the end of Southard Street. Show times are Wednesday – Friday at 5:30 and 7:30 pm, Saturday at 3 and 5:30 pm, and Sunday at 2 and 4:30pm. Get your tickets there!

January 25-27 King Mackerel Tournament - Big king mackerel migrate to the waters around Key West each winter, and a fittingly large prize awaits the winner of this challenge. The angler who weighs in the heaviest kingfish is to go home with $10,000.

January 26 The Key West Firehouse Museum Grand Opening – 6:00 pm at 1026 Grinnell Street.

January 26-27 28th Annual Key West Craft Show - Juried artisans and crafters display their talents at a popular show on lower Whitehead and Caroline Streets in historic Old Town. The show is free and will be held from 10 A.M. TO 5 P.M. daily.

January 27 19th Annual Key West Master Chefs Classic - Local restaurants vie for top honors in three categories; appetizers, entrees and desserts. Participants get to taste all the food made at this event while judges pick the winners. Held at Westin Key West Resort & Marina Pier at 245 Front Street, open from 4-7 p.m. Habitat for Humanity’s 13th Annual ISland Grass Music Fest – held at Boondock’s Grill on Ramrod Key from 1pm to 6pm. Impromptu Classical Concerts of Key West – The Poulenc Trio at 4pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

January 29-31 Waterfront Playhouse presents: Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks - When a formidable retired widow hires an ex-Broadway chorus boy to give her private dance lessons, it’s hate at first sight. Eventually they both learn unexpected lessons about friendship and life. Part comedy, part drama and part cha-cha-cha. An Off-Broadway and Regional Theater Hit. Show time 8 p.m.

February 1-2 GLEE and Key West Garden Club Lecture Series - Mr. Chris Rollins of the Miami Fruit and Spice Park will present, “Growing Edibles in the Florida Keys without Pesticides.” All events will take place at the Key West Garden Club at Higgs Beach. Registration fee is $25. Friday, February 1, 2013: Reception 6pm-8pm Meet and greet the presenter, Mr. Chris Rollins of the Fruit and Spice Park, Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation Department. Chris will provide a brief overview of Saturday’s topics in the Key West Garden Club’s reception area, refreshments will be provided, and registration for Saturday’s program will be available at that time. Saturday, February 2, 2013: Morning Session 9am-12pm Growing Fruit Without Pesticides, topics: how to plant trees in the Keys, watering, wind, salt, species available and their requirements, ripening season for each fruit, 10 bullet-proof fruit trees. Afternoon Session 2pm-5pm Growing Vegetables Without Pesticides. Choosing the right soil, raised beds, container growing, irrigation, vegetables that don’t need pesticides, planting seasons, cultural practices for successful crops, composting, fertilizer. February 1-3 Cuda Bowl - Shallow water flats anglers and guides are invited to hook-up and fight their barracuda rivals. Event is to be headquartered at Hurricane Hole Marina, Stock Island. Prizes and trophies are to be awarded for top angler and guide in light tackle spin and fly divisions.

February 2 Florence Spottswood’s Humanitarian of the Year Award – Held at the Marriott Beachside Resort from 6:30 to 10pm. For more information about this event please call 305-296-4033. February 8-10 Civil War Days Heritage Festival - Colorful Civil War re-enactments, the roar of cannon fire and the sight of soldiers in Civil War uniforms are to greet visitors at Key West’s oceanfront historic Civil War-era Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, as participants journey into the island’s past.

February 10 Anne McKee Artists Fund Auction - Attendees can choose from the work of 60 Florida Keys artists, ranging from renowned masters to emerging talents. An Art Preview is scheduled from 10 – 7 p.m. Feb. 7th – 9th at the Key West Women’s Club, 319 Duval Street – site of the first Anne McKee Fund Auction. An Art Preview Party will take place on Saturday, Feb. 9th from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Women’s Club. The Art Preview and Party are free of charge and open to the public. The Preview Party will afford guests the opportunity to meet the Anne McKee Artists Fund Board, preview the auction lots and meet the 2013 auction artists. As well as fine artwork, attractions at the auction include an open bar, gourmet hors d’oeuvres and champagne. In addition, attendees can purchase tickets for a drawing to win a 2-night, 3-day stay at Little Palm Island. Parking spots in front of The Oldest House will be reserved to assist patrons with art pick-up after the auction. Tickets are $30 per person at the door.

February 14 Wesley House 30th Annual Valentine’s Day Gala – From 6:30 – 9:30pm on the grounds of the historic Curry mansion at 511 Caroline Street, Master of Ceremonies Howard Livingston of the Mile Marker 24 Band will host this event. March 1-23 17th Annual Sculpture Key West - This stunning art exhibit showcases the work of leading contemporary sculptors at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park and the Key West Garden Club at West Martello Tower. Twenty-three contemporary sculptures and two performances are planned to enhance the land and seascapes around two historic Civil War-era forts. Among the projected highlights of the 2012/2013 exhibition are a steel and wood skeletal structure that is part animal, ship, airplane and sleigh, a massive monumental concrete relic of a shell from a world unknown, a mysterious array of manhole covers that seem to melt in the sun and the long awaited Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail Unicycle Tour!

April 3-7 Key West Sailfish Championship - New in 2013, this four-day challenge offers a $50,000 first place prize, $15,000 and $10,000 to second- and third-place anglers, respectively. Early entry fee per angler is $1800. After March 1, 2013, entry fee is $2500.

April 4-13 Waterfront Playhouse presents: Typhoon Judy - As Typhoon Viola swirls around Hong Kong, Judy Garland lies comatose in a hospital from a suicide attempt. In a hallucination, Typhoon Judy enters a desolate rehearsal hall with a lone piano player and begins to tell tales of her life with comedy, anecdotes and, of course, song. Created by and starring Christopher Peterson. Showtimes 8 p.m.

April 5-7 Key West Fishing Tournament Kick-Off - Fifteen target species and $5,000 in cash prizes highlight this open-to-the-public event, heralding the beginning of more than eight months of exciting Keys fishing. Cash awards await individual participants who catch the heaviest dolphin, kingfish, cobia, blackfin tuna, mackerel, mutton snapper, wahoo, mangrove snapper and grunt, and for boat teams that score the most releases of tarpon, permit, bonefish, barracuda, marlin and sailfish. Junior anglers under age 15 can also fish. Entries in the kickoff also are eligible for the Key West Fishing Tournament, which runs through Nov. 30, 2013.

April 6-30 Key West Fishing Tournament - More than 40 species of fish are targeted during these months, with divisions for men, women, junior anglers (ages 10 to 14) and Pee Wees (under 10 years old). In an April kickoff event, anglers target 15 species and $5,000 in cash prizes is split between the top anglers.

April 10-14 World Sailfish Championship - With a guaranteed top prize of $100,000, the prestigious sailfish challenge draws top teams and benefits the Don Shula Foundation for Breast Cancer Research, Camp Boggy Creek for youngsters with chronic and life-threatening illnesses, and other national and local charities.

April 21 Race Around the Rock - A new 15k run in Key West, the event has a 7 a.m. start time. The course is a flat, fast course starting at the foot of Margaret Street, in the southernmost city of the continental United States. Enjoy the scenic waterfront and see a piece of Key West history while running through Old Town.

April 30 Red Barn Theatre presents: Oklahoma Smith and the Pantheon of Annihilation - Parody, adventure and humor abound in this original action adventure as famed explorer Oklahoma Smith and his trusty sidekick set out to find the lost “Book of the Dead” and save the world. The plot twists and turns as each major decision in this “choose your own adventure” is decided by the audience. May 11 5th Annual Battle In The Bay Dragon Boat Festival - Don’t miss this high-action competitive racing event in the southernmost city. Watch as teams of 20 paddlers power the sleek, 40-foot-long race boats in unison along a race course — a display of strength and teamwork among men and women of all ages.

May 13 Waterfront Playhouse presents: Behind the Scenes - Get a backstage tour of the set for “Deathtrap” at the Waterfront Playhouse with Artistic Director (Danny Weathers) and Technical Director (Michael Boyer). Cash prizes to be awarded for heaviest fish, $2500 for heaviest dolphin. All proceeds benefit Anchors Aweigh Club, a 12-step recovery center in Key West.

May 25 Yamaha Dolphin Masters Invitational - In this challenge headquartered at Key West’s Historic Seaport, more than $13,000 awaits the angler scoring the highest total combined weight of three dolphin catches. Many additional prizes await other top anglers, and there is no limit on the number of participating boats.

June 21-23 Key West Gator Club Dolphin Derby - A grand prize of $5,000 cash is to be awarded the boat team with the largest aggregate weight in dolphin during the derby’s two fishing days, with teams allowed to enter one qualifying fish each day. Second- and third-place teams will earn $2,500 and $1,000, respectively. Individual anglers can compete for trophies, prizes and cash totaling more than $20,000 in the tournament’s divisions for male, female and junior participants.

June 22-23 Key West Island Swim: FKCC Swim Around Key West - This United States Masters Swimming-sanctioned event is a 12.5-mile swim clockwise around the island of Key West that is open for all age groups. A swim meet is held June 23.

July 4 29th Annual Hospice/Visiting Nurses Association July 4 Picnic - The celebration is set to take place at the luxurious Casa Marina Resort & Beach Club, A Waldorf Astoria Collection, located at 1500 Reynolds St. overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Scheduled to start at 5 p.m. with fireworks starting at 9 p.m., courtesy of the Key West Rotary Club. The traditional buffet offers hamburgers, hot dogs and all the fixings. Lavish buffet also to be offered. Meal tickets to be sold. Free watermelon, popcorn and cold drinks, live music, a silent auction and lots of children’s games round out the fun-filled family festivities.

July 14-17 Del Brown Invitational Permit Tournament - Anglers fly-fish on the flats in a challenge that honors the late angling pioneer Del Brown, who caught and released more than 500 permit off the Keys. Professionals and guides are allowed to compete as well.

July 17-20 Drambuie Key West Marlin Tournament - Anglers ply the waters once fished by novelist Ernest Hemingway, vying for $50,000 in guaranteed cash prizes. Held in conjunction with Key West’s annual Hemingway Days, the event awards $25,000 to the first-place team. Teams can enter one fun fish (dolphin, tuna, wahoo or released sailfish) per day to add to their point total.

July 21-23 Hemingway 5K Sunset Run & Paddleboard Race - The oldest ongoing 5k run in Key West, this event is to be held at 7:30 p.m. The course is a flat, fast 5k (three mile) course starting at the Southernmost Point in the continental United States. Enjoy the scenic waterfront and see a piece of Key West history while running through Old Town. A registration booth is to be open race day at the Southernmost Hotel, 1319 Duval Street from 5 p.m. – 7:15 p.m. More details on 5K and paddleboard race to follow.

September 3-8 Womenfest Key West - Womenfest offers a wide range of activities guaranteed to appeal to a broad range of interests. Golfing with palm trees and iguanas, clothing-optional pool parties, a sizzling dance club scene, and women-only water excursions that range from jet skis to dolphin watching all promise to pique the interest of the more adventurous while film, live music, and special comedy shows offer the opportunity to enjoy paradise at a slower pace. All of this on a tropical island that is close to perfect and far from normal!

September 7-9 Robert James S.L.A.M. Celebrity Tournament - In the first of three tournaments in the annual Redbone Celebrity Tournament Series, also called The Trilogy, anglers target tarpon, permit and bonefish to achieve the coveted “flats grand slam.” The event raises funds for the fight against cystic fibrosis.

October 18-27 34th Annual Fantasy Fest - This outrageous 10-day costuming and masking celebration, themed “Superheroes, Villains … and Beyond!” features flamboyant costume competitions including one for pets, promenades, street fairs and a grand parade that stars marching groups, island bands and lavish floats. More than 40 masquerade contests, themed parties, parades and other spectacles are to challenge the creativity of mask and costume designers.

November 3-10 Key West World Championship Race - High-speed offshore powerboats race in Key West Harbor and surrounding waters to continue Key West’s longstanding tradition in this 31st annual challenge, known internationally as the Indianapolis 500 of powerboat racing. A portion of the 6.5-mile course runs through Key West Harbor, meaning smooth water where racers can achieve speeds above 140 mph and provide fans breathtaking displays of skill and power.

December 31 New Year’s Eve Shoe Drop Celebration - The Southernmost City celebrates with a descending 6-foot red high heel shoe carrying drag queen Sushi at the Bourbon Street Pub/New Orleans House complex, 724 Duval St. Seconds before midnight, the high heel bearing a lavishly gowned and coiffed Sushi is to be lowered from the second-story balcony of the complex toward the cheering crowds below. As midnight strikes and the New Year officially begins, she will land and gleefully pop the cork on a ceremonial bottle of champagne
